Etna

Etna is one of Catania’s main tourist attractions and a World Heritage Site, as declared by Unesco. It is one of the few active volcanoes in the world to boast the most spectacular eruptions (though not dangerous in recent years for humans) attracting tourists, eager to get up close to such an enormous and fascinating spectacle of nature.

It is not only these exceptional moments that attract tourism to Mount Etna: throughout the year it is possible to get up close to the giant Mungibeddu (as the citizens of Catania like to call it) while just going for a simple walk with friends.

In winter, snow can be seen at approximately 1000 metres, and from the north and south slopes there is access to the two Etnean ski resorts. While skiing on Mount Etna you can also admire the sea from afar: a real privilege for the few!

Piano Provenzana and Nicolosi are the names of the volcano’s ski resorts with slopes that are ideal for both experienced and beginner skiers. At other times of the year it is the spectacle of ‘nature’ that dominates the volcano: in fact, Etna Park is a goldmine for plant and animal enthusiasts.
In the vast greenery surrounding the crater there is an abundance of vegetation including the indigenous broom plant and numerous vineyards, from which the excellent DOC Etna is obtained. The peculiarity of the volcanic soil has allowed agriculture to thrive, producing items such as pistachio nuts and strawberries, bringing forth a fortune for the territory. Mount Etna’s fauna is equally as fascinating, with wolves, wild boars, deer, roe deer, porcupines, foxes, rabbits, wolverines and wild cats.

It is also highly recommended to participate in the guided tours by companies that have geological guides and mountain experts, if you really want to discover all of the beauty and secrets of the volcano that dominates Catania from its aquifers to its summit. Additionally, there are hiking, food and wine, or jeep excursions: everyone can choose the one that best suits their needs. Other attractions not to be missed during a visit are the ‘craterand the Frost Cave, a peculiar place with a constant temperature of -0 creating perennial ice even in the warmer months!

During your stay at our bed and breakfast you will be able to admire the incredible Mount Etna spectacle, the wonderful volcano that towers over Catania.  For all other attractions in our city please ask our Reception staff for more information.
